Vigevano, with more than 63000 inhabitants, is the second center of the province of Pavia for population, first for municipal territory with its 82.27 km², 20 more than the capital. The city is located in the Ticino Valley Park, the river that bathes it.

HISTORY OF THE CITY

The first documents relating to the city are dated around the year 1000. During the time of the Lordship, he changed the domain many times.

It starts from the Dalla Torre and then goes under the control of the Visconti and finally the Sforza.   Under the rule of these families, Vigevano saw the creation of his most important urban works, including Ducal Square with the cathedral and the palace.

PIAZZA DUCALE

Surely the city’s greatest attraction is its square, built by Ludovico il Moro around 1500. It is one of the most characteristic squares of Italy with its shape and the porches that surround it on three sides. The third side is occupied by the Vigevano cathedral.

Vigevano Cathedral

This church of architectural style Manierista, dedicated to Sant’Ambrogio was started by Francesco II Sforza in 1532 and finished in 1606 by Bishop Giorgio Odescalchi. Certainly interesting are the works preserved inside the temple: The chapels with altars, the Treasury of the Duomo and the special cane organ

It is a military architecture of the city, located in the highest part of it, every Vigevano ruler has contributed to the alteration of the castle over the centuries, to be mentioned: -The stables – The lodge of the Ladies -The Tower of Bramante To go there is also a work born at the same time with the castle the “covered road”
