Desenzano is a town in the province of Brescia, located in the southern part of Lake Garda, near Sirmione. This town, also known as the capital of the lake due to its size, has its reputation as a tourist destination for its many shops, locales, beaches and cultural riches. Just on this last point will focus our attention.
The Archaeological Museum
In this museum are collected the finds and artefacts found on the southern shores of Lake Garda, dating back to prehistoric times. This museum is also known for preserving the world’s oldest antique plow dating from the Bronze Age.
The castle of Desenzano
This building was used to defend the city during the barbarian invasion period and precisely because of this it rises in a dominant position on the hamlet.
This location owes its reputation to “terrace on the Garda” which makes it one of the main reasons for visiting it.
The Old Town
This part of the city, dating to the sixteenth century, is easily visited by strolling through the streets of the city. Here you can find a square overlooking the Palazzo del Provveditore and the monument of S. Angela Merici. Moving on the lakeshore you can see the monument of General Achilles Pope, by Giancarlo Maroni, also known for having made the Vittoriale d’Annunzio.
The Todeschini Palace and the old harbor
The port dates back to 1200, when it was used as a grain market of the Venetian Republic. Inside the harbor, on the dock, you can see the Todeschi Palace, now used as a Municipal Palace. This building owes its peculiarity to the “stone of the unemployed” used over time in case of bankruptcy.
The Duomo and the Last Supper of Tiepolo
The cathedral is one of the most important testimonies of the Renaissance. Looking at its facade you can notice decorative elements of the Baroque and inside it is the Chapel of the S.S. Sacramento where the last Tiepolo dinner is visible.
The Roman villa
This building was brought to light only in 1921 and has become one of the most important late antique villas in northern Italy thanks to its 240 square meters of polychrome mosaics.
